MCL Tears Surgical Treatment
What are the surgical options for an MCL injury?
If you have a complete tear of the MCL (Grade 3) or if multiple structures in the inner part of your knee are injured, surgery might be necessary. It’s best to have the surgery within two weeks after the injury, once you have regained your range of motion. Doing the surgery early helps prevent severe scarring and keeps the knee in the correct position, which leads to better recovery.
- Augmentation Procedures: This technique involves repairing your native tissue, if reparable and adding suture or a graft (a piece of tissue from a person who has passed away) to support your damaged MCL. It helps to strengthen the area and improve healing.
- Full Reconstruction: This surgery replaces the damaged MCL or all the structures of the inner knee (MCL and POL) with a graft. The choice depends on how severe the injury is.
Recent methods in surgery have made it possible for many patients to return to their usual activities, even those that are high-level or sports-related. Restoring the knee’s normal structure early on can lead to better results and faster recovery.
How long does it take to recover after MCL surgery?
Recovery from MCL surgery depends on how severe the injury is and whether other ligaments are affected. It can take between 6 and 12 months to fully recover. Here’s what you can expect:
- First Few Days: Physical therapy begins on the first or second day after surgery to help improve the range of motion in your knee.
- First 6 Weeks: You’ll need to avoid putting much weight on your knee. Use crutches or a walker if needed.
- 7-8 Weeks: You may be able to start driving again if your knee feels ready.
- 2-4 Months: Start working on endurance and strength. Agility exercises and running can begin around 4 months if you’re progressing well.
- 9 Months: Most people can return to sports or high-level activities around this time.
