Trochanteric Bursitis Prevention

When trochanteric bursitis goes untreated, it can sometimes progress to tearing of the tendons around the bursa. The gluteus medius and gluteus minimus are major tendons on the outside of the hip and are sometimes referred to as the rotator cuff of the hip. With constant inflammation, these gluteal tendons can sometimes suffer and begin to tear, which may cause further pain and difficulty with walking.

Not everyone with untreated trochanteric bursitis will undergo progression of disease that involves gluteal tendons, and the rate of progression can vary widely among individuals. However, early intervention through conservative treatments or surgery helps to reduce the risk of these long-term complications while improving hip joint function and overall quality of life.

Preventative measures aim to minimize inflammation and pain around the hip. These include activity modification to reduce putting additional stress on the hips, losing weight if appropriate, and maintaining hip strength, flexibility, and conditioning. It is also important to correct underlying hip conditions such as leg-length differences and poor posture.
