ACL Surgery Recovery
After your ACL surgery, your recovery starts the very next day. Right away, you’ll begin physical therapy to help regain your range of motion and strengthen your thigh muscle. The recovery process has several steps to help you heal well and keep you from getting hurt again in the future.
Getting fully better from ACL surgery usually takes about 9 to 12 months. There are studies that show that your risk of a re-injury goes down if you wait a minimum of 9 months. Even after you’ve finished your rehab, it’s important to continue doing exercises you learned and continue working on strength, mobility and mechanics. Prior to returning to your sports of choice, we perform return to sport testing with elite physical therapist that specialize in this process. We want to make sure we have good data points that demonstrate you are ready to return to sports and not just base it on a timeline. The testing will give us information comparing your surgical leg to your non-surgical leg. We will be in constant communication with your physical therapist and come to a decision as a team on when you are ready to return to sports to optimize your success and minimize risks of re-injury.
