LCL Tears Non-Surgical Treatment

Can an LCL Injury Be Treated Without Surgery?

Most LCL injuries, especially if they also involve other knee ligaments, usually need surgery to fully heal because the knee’s structure is naturally unstable when the ligaments are damaged. The thighbone and shinbone in the knee are round, which makes it hard for this part of the knee to stay stable without proper support.

However, if someone only has an isolated LCL injury (where the LCL is hurt but not other ligaments), surgery might not be necessary. Instead, you can try non-surgical treatments depending on how bad the injury is.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

  1. Rest and Activity Change: Avoid activities that make the knee hurt or feel unstable.
  2. Medications: Take over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory meds to help with pain and swelling.
  3. Knee Brace: Use a special hinged knee brace to support and protect the knee.
  4. Physical Therapy: Do exercises to strengthen the knee and improve its function.

Most people start to feel better within 2 to 4 months with these treatments. If your knee pain goes away and you can get back to your usual activities, you may not need surgery.
